Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning integrated with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) becomes a strategic approach to prepare vocational high school (SMK) graduates who are adaptive to the demands of the 21st century while also being sensitive to sustainability issues. This article aims to describe the concept and strategies for implementing STEAM-based ESD learning in SMK, as well as to map the opportunities and challenges of its application. This study emphasizes that the characteristics of SMK, which are focused on work competencies, project-based learning, and authentic products, align well with the STEAM-ESD design. STEAM encourages contextual problem-solving across disciplines, creativity, collaboration, and science-technology literacy, while ESD strengthens the dimensions of values, ethics, and concrete actions for environmental, social, cultural, and economic sustainability. Effective implementation can be achieved through Project-Based Learning (PBL), selecting local sustainability issues as driving questions, strengthening collaboration among teachers of productive and adaptive subjects, and process-product-based assessment. Key challenges identified include limited teacher understanding of STEAM and ESD, the need for project facilities and funding support, and cross-disciplinary curriculum coordination. This article recommends strengthening teacher capacity, providing STEAM-ESD project guidelines, and supporting school policies to ensure learning produces vocational graduates who excel in skills while also being sustainability-conscious.
