Focus and Scope

Journal of Educational Synthesis Studies (JESS) focuses on scholarly work that systematically interrogates, maps, and synthesizes the existing body of educational knowledge through rigorous review methodology. The journal is particularly interested in manuscripts that position review-based inquiry not merely as a summary of literature, but as a substantive contribution to educational theory, policy, and practice.

JESS publishes studies that consolidate fragmented evidence, identify patterns and gaps in educational research, and generate insights that are meaningful beyond the boundaries of a single study. The journal especially welcomes methodologically transparent and reproducible work that engages critically with the accumulated evidence in any domain of education.

The scope of JESS includes the following areas:

  • Systematic Literature Reviews in Education
  • Meta-Analysis and Quantitative Evidence Synthesis
  • Scoping Reviews and Systematic Mapping Studies
  • Bibliometric and Science Mapping Studies in Education
  • Integrative and Narrative Reviews with Systematic Procedures
  • Umbrella Reviews and Reviews of Reviews

JESS welcomes manuscripts across all levels and contexts of education, from early childhood through higher and professional education. Manuscripts that do not employ a clearly articulated and replicable review procedure, or that are primarily empirical, descriptive, or opinion-based without a synthesis framework, are not considered within the scope of the journal.
